Description

In July 2002, Madagascar health authorities were alerted to a substantial number of deaths in the village of Sahafata in the rural highlands of the former Fianarantsoa Province. Sahafata, which had a population of 2,160, had experienced 27 deaths attributed to acute respiratory illness. To reach villages in Madagascar’s rural highlands, the international team traveled on dirt roads and, at times, across rough terrain.
